Acupuncture may improve pain, sleep and quality of life in older people with knee osteoarthritis

This randomized controlled trial compared the effects of true or sham acupuncture on pain and sleep in 24 older patients with knee osteoarthritis. Those receiving true acupuncture reported greater improvement in pain, sleep ratings and general health, vitality and social functioning. Acupuncture may provide a therapeutic modality that avoids the potential complications of additional pharmaceuticals in older persons to relieve pain and improve sleep.
